In the fall of 2023, Kim Bennett Porter completed a 18’ x 4’ mural dedicated to Gina Lockwood (champion of The Alley Project), her late partner “Jimmy Jet” and the variety of plants and animals that also call the alley home. In early 2022, at the prompting of Gina, residents of the alley agreed on a shared vision to turn its usable soil, odd shaped nooks, wonky fences and charming garage backsides into purposeful, inviting and communal spaces. Since then, community gardens have thrived, bearing two seasons of fruits, vegetables and herbs. An evolving children’s gallery of sculpture and art has been created under the direction of “the alley kids.” Colonies of bees have successfully become established and shared their honey. Community gatherings with live music, food and vendors have been enjoyed by local residents. While I have always been enthusiastic about abstract art, my interest is in ALL of it; large shapes, intricate mark making, bold colors, earthy neutrals, botanicals, portraiture and landscapes. Overwhelmed with choices and searching where to begin, I committed myself to focusing on the most robust elements of a visual experience. I worked to identify the colors that most captivate my attention and realized they are the colors I am often most intimidated to use. I set my intention to distinguish the most striking shapes, lines and curves I find appealing. I envisioned the footprint of a building, imagined myself walking through the front door and thought about what would cause me to turn and walk toward one visual choice over another. As it happens, we find ourselves amidst springtime in Idaho. After a long, grey winter, our senses can once again be indulged with all that comes from long hours of sunlight. The open blue skies have returned with green foothills, vibrant flowers and rushing waters of the Boise River. I find it is no coincidence nature uses the same visual elements to lure us in closer. I invite you to notice which aspects of this work most draw you in and reflect spring as moment in time. Between the handed down stories of her family's pioneer past and the influence of her rich Basque heritage, Kim has cultivated her core values based in a persevering grit, a love for the natural world and a passion for cultural art forms. She most recently focused her energy on studying and teaching West African music and dance. Dance impacted Kim's life in a profound way during a time of significant personal crisis. Through this experience Kim came to witness the incredible healing power of practices which help put us in a state of concentrated present moment awareness or FLOW. In pursuit of deeper understanding, Kim began to study and train in MBSR meditation. She currently teaches workshops focused on the brain science behind meditation and its benefits across many areas of life.
